Since last July I’ve been training for an Ironman 70.3 – which includes 1.9km swim, 90km on bike and 21km run. About 6 months ago I applied to Ironman 70.3 Mallorca, but had no experience with a road bicycle at that point.
In November I received my Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8.0, but as it was already too cold outside, I trained only indoors, and my longest training till April was 65km.
So I was very excited to take part in VeloLove.lv training camp to test out the bike on a real road and do some training in Mallorca before the competition to get some feeling, what is it like to do a 90km bike route with a 850m climb. The short answer – not easy!
My longest training was 120km, for 2 times I did the Ironman 70.3 route and in total I managed to do 900km on bike. I am still not sure how I will feel doing a 21km run after 90km on bike, but at least now I have some confidence about the cycling part.
On some days I was quite exhausted, but the conditions for training were so good that it was fun to go out. On the roads there are more bikes than cars and you feel safe all the time. The weather is warm and mostly sunny, each day you can choose different routes – some with more hills, some more flat, but all of them have amazing views. And when you go down some hill with 50-60km/h, that makes you either smile or scared, depending on the wind 🙂
